Spain and Japan secured their places in the final 16 on Thursday. Japan defeated Luis Enrique’s team 2-1 to win Group E, while Germany was eliminated on goal differential despite defeating Costa Rica 4-2.

High drama occurred in Group H as South Korea scored in stoppage time to defeat Portugal 2-1 and advance to the round of 16 on goals scored. Despite Uruguay’s 2-0 victory over Ghana, both countries were eliminated from the World Cup. When Cameroon unexpectedly defeated Brazil 1-0 in Group G, Vincent Aboubakar’s injury-time header put an end to Brazil’s undefeated streak. Meanwhile, Switzerland defeated Serbia 3-2 after falling down by two goals to claim second place. On the basis of goal differential, Brazil won the group.
