UFC Upsets 2022: Aljamain Sterling Stuns Petr Yan in a rematch

Aljamain Sterling did not win the UFC bantamweight championship the first time around. But in his rematch with Petr Yan, he won a tight split decision over the interim title in the UFC 273 co-main event, reuniting it without any controversy.

Yan deflected Aljamain Sterling’s initial takedown attempt, but the New Yorker kept up the pressure, hitting three strong kicks to the body. Yan continued pressing forward the whole time, missing wildly when he threw, but he did score late with a left hand. Sterling brought the action to the ground in the second minute of round two and swiftly seized Yan’s back. And, although he didn’t get the finish, the “Funk Master” had a commanding frame.

Yan was brought down again in the second minute of round three, with Sterling swiftly recovering his back and dominating the fight as Yan was unable to escape. To begin round four, Yan went on the offensive while also defending Sterling’s takedown attempts. Aljamain Sterling briefly locked up a triangle choke that Yan easily escaped, eventually settling into his opponent’s guard.

Aljamain Sterling attempted to flee, but Yan held the battle on the ground, enabling him to win a crucial round. In the first half of the fifth round, Yan consistently resisted Sterling’s takedown attempts, and in the second half, the Russian added to his offensive point total and was obviously the fresher fighter as he dominated the action until the bell.
