T20 World Cup: Nissanka shines but England restrict Sri Lanka to 141/8

Sri Lanka got off to a fast start thanks to Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis, but England battled their way back in the middle to limit the Asian champions to 141/8 in their last Super 12 match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at the SCG in Sydney on Saturday.

The Sri Lankan openers put on a 39-run partnership in the first four overs, and at 80/2 after ten overs, Sri Lanka was in a very good position. Despite the departures of Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva, Nissanka persisted and scored 67 off 45 deliveries.

Sri Lanka was 118/4 when Nissanka left, and things went downhill from there, with the team scoring only 23 runs in their last 27 deliveries. After a rough start, England’s bowlers produced a fantastic recovery, giving their side a solid opportunity of reaching the semi-finals.

Sri Lanka has already qualified for the semi-finals, while England must win this match to go to the final four. Australia, on the other hand, would like Sri Lanka to win this game since only a win will get them into the semi-finals. However, with such a low total to protect, that appears tough.
