T20 World Cup: New Zealand batting first in crucial Ireland clash

Ireland captain Andrew Balbirnie won the toss and chose to field in Friday’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup match against New Zealand in Adelaide. While Ireland is already out of the semi-finals, the match at Adelaide Oval is essential for the Kiwis as they attempt to finish in the top two in Group 1.

Australia, England, and New Zealand now have five points with one game remaining, but only two teams will advance to the final four. If all three teams win their remaining games, the two semi-finalists from this group will be determined by net run rate. Because of the large net run rate disparity, the Kiwis will undoubtedly win that race. What they can’t afford is a loss because it will very probably smooth the way for England and Australia, if they win their remaining matches.

That is what Kane Williamson’s team will try to avoid in this match. Ireland may have already been eliminated from the semi-finals, but they have already demonstrated that they are a force to be reckoned with on their day.

They have already overcome a behemoth in this tournament, defeating England in a rain-soaked match, which says much about their strength as a squad. Both sides have chosen unchanged starting lineups for the match. New Zealand has plenty of runs on the board Ireland needs to get 186 in their 20 overs to win the game.
