Pakistan needed everything to go right at the start of the day simply to be in contention for a semi-final slot, and Babar Azam’s team had everything go precisely how they wanted as they clinched what appeared to be an unexpected position in the final four.

Following the Netherlands’ spectacular victory over South Africa earlier in the day, Pakistan’s match versus Bangladesh became a virtual quarter-final, with the duel between the two Asian sides keeping everyone on the tip of their seats until the thrilling conclusion.

Shaheen Afridi returned to his magnificent form with 4/22 at Adelaide Oval as Bangladesh could only manage 127/8 in superb batting conditions and Pakistan reached the winning target with two overs remaining despite a few hiccups in reply.
