Pele, the legendary Brazilian footballer, Pele dies aged 82, according to his agency. The former Santos FC hero, generally considered one of the greatest footballers of all time, has been hospitalized at Sao Paulo’s Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital since November 29. After fighting colon cancer since September 2021, a medical assessment shortly before Christmas revealed that he required treatment for cardiac and renal problems.
Pele, born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, joined Santos at the age of 15 and the Brazilian national team a year later, breaking onto the international football scene as a 17-year-old in the 1958 World Cup. He was the only player to win three World Cups during his international career, in 1958, 1962, and 1970.
His contribution to Brazil’s third title, in Mexico in 1970, is in football mythology since he was a major member of perhaps the sport’s greatest-ever international squad. From 1957 until 1977, he had a dazzling 20-year career in which he scored 757 goals in 831 appearances, however, Santos claims his total was closer to 1,000.
