There are two rounds of round-robin play in the Pakistan Super League Season 8. The top four teams progress to the playoffs after each club plays the other twice. Although having used the DRS system in T20s, which the International Cricket Council subsequently copied, the league adheres to the rules and regulations set out by that organization.

In the group stage, a victory is worth two points, a tie is worth one, and a defeat is for none. Once both sides have played their allotted number of overs and there is a tie in the scores, the match winner is decided by a super over. The following factors are used to rank teams during the group stage:

  1. A higher number of points
  2. If equal, better run rate
  3. If equal, the highest number of wins
  4. If equal, the fewest losses
  5. If still equal, the results of the head-to-head meeting

A Super over is used to decide the winner of any playoff game in case there is no clear winner. The club that finished in the highest league position at the conclusion of the regular season is judged the winner of the match if the super over is not achievable or the outcome of the over is a draw.
