The 506 runs scored by England on the first day of the Test match set a new record for the most runs ever scored on the first day of a Test match. They outperformed the 494 runs scored by Australia in the first Test of the series in Sydney against South Africa in 1910. Australia followed with a score of 494/6. On the opening day of the 2012 Test in Adelaide, Australia scored 482/5 against South Africa in 86.5 overs, with a scoring rate of 5.57. With 15 overs remaining from the day’s alloted 75, England scored 506 runs, for an astounding daytime run rate of 6.75.

Sandeep Patil v Bob Willis in 1982, Chris Gayle v Matthew Hoggard in 2004, Ramnaresh Sarwan v Munaf Patel in 2006 and Sanath Jayasuriya vs James Anderson in 2007 were the other instances.
