Maheesh Theekshana the Specialist with the Bowl

Maheesh Theekshana is a right arm offbreak bowler. He is the first spinner to have bowled in Twenty20 matches for Sri Lanka, taking two wickets on debut against India in 2006. After six months with Gloucestershire as an overseas player he returned to his native country, where his bowling was ineffective and expensive, so he went back to England, signed for Northamptonshire. He has also been a member of Sri Lanka’s squad in five tests but has taken only one wicket.

Maheesh Theekshana is a specialist bowler, he is not a all rounder and nor will he be. Maheesh Theekshana has been picked to play in Twenty20 matches for Sri Lanka mainly because of his bowling. His right arm offbreak bowling style may not have taken many wickets on debut but what it did do was keep India’s top order at bay and allow Sri Lanka to win their first Twenty20 match. That said Maheesh Theekshana might never take as many wickets in any other game as his debut, but that does not mean that he cannot be just as effective with ball.

Wicket Taking option For Srilankan Cricket Team

In November 2010, Maheesh took his place in the history of Srilankan Cricket Team by being the first Sri Lankan bowler to take two wickets in consecutive balls against England at Kingston Cricket Club Oval. He captured those wickets with what Wisden termed sure-handed bowling. This year (2011) was an eventful one for Maheesh, as he achieved a personal best of six international five-wicket hauls which is ranked him second on Sri Lanka’s all-time list behind Muttiah Muralitharan. In addition to these highlights, he also captured his only ODI five-wicket haul.

Deadly Bowling Combination of Maheesh Theekshana and Hasaranga

Maheesh Theekshana can bowl an off break delivery with the arm in a three quarter medium pace. Maheesh Theekshana is famous for his deadly bowling combination of Hasaranga. The left-arm spinner has put away many batsmen using his guile and cunning in international cricket. He is adept at deceiving the batsman by coming around the wicket and disguising where he is going to pitch it, making it tough for the batsman to predict which direction they need to move their feet towards.

As a result, batsmen are often beaten by him bowled and lbw. Maheesh Theekshana has an excellent record against Australia which makes him a useful weapon in Sri Lanka’s arsenal. He is most effective when playing on his home turf because he is familiar with pitches and conditions. He also bowls with good control and accuracy on slow tracks which suits his style of bowling.
