Karthik Meiyappan, who was born in Chennai, India, and who began honing his cricket skills in Abu Dhabi and Dubai in his early adolescence, delivered a moment to remember on Tuesday in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.
Karthik Meiyappan’s remarkable hat-trick against Sri Lanka, which included tearing through the middle order and capping the achievement with a turner right through the gate to shatter Dasun Shanaka’s timbers, was a “magical piece of bowling” that helped write him into history.

Only five men’s players have ever taken a hat-trick at an ICC Men’s T20 World Cup: Brett Lee, Kagiso Rabada, Curtis Campher, Wanindu Hasaranga, and now Karthik Meiyappan. There were not many hat tricks in the game of a greater caliber than Karthik Meiyappan’s. It was a breathtaking moment, and the 22-year-old walked reporters through each delivery after the game:
1. Bhanuka Rajapaksa, 5 (8) – caught by Kashi Daud at deep cover
Karthik Meiyappan said, “First up against Rajapaksa, I thought the length side was a long boundary for him. “I assumed he would try to drag me down there because, according to my memory, he was five-from-five or something similar. He attempted to cut it off when I started to push it, but Kashif was already on the boundary when he did so. The first one was that.”
2. Charith Asalanka, 0 (1) – edged behind Vriitya Aravind
“Then Asalanka entered the room. For me, that was an obvious choice. I intended to bowl straight up and around. Vriitya made a spectacular catch.”
3. Dasun Shanaka, 0 (1) – clean bowled through the gate
When Dasun walked in, I was experiencing my feelings of being on a hat trick, but all I wanted to do was bowl at the stumps. And after that, I have no control over what occurs. Again, though, I just bowled around him, and I believe he chose it (incorrectly) and attempted to go over cover. But, yes.

Before the hat-trick ball, I was clear about my plans. And nobody entered. But the wicketkeeper and I always talk while we bowl. We conversed in Tamil because we both hail from the same city. Before that, we had a talk during which I just said what I wanted to.
In T20 Internationals, the UAE had never achieved a hat-trick before, and Karthik Meiyappan’s effort won him acclaim from ICC pundit and former Sri Lankan player Russell Arnold. Arnold stated, “He was bowling well all the way through, the wrong’un none of the batters picked.
It was the middle of the Sri Lankan order, not the tail, so these are good hitters. and he simply misled them. It was an incredibly effective period that kept Sri Lanka’s points total at 150 as opposed to what could have been 180.
