IPL 2023 Players’ payday
Several Indian and international stars were auctioned off at the IPL 2023 Auction in Kochi on Friday, and some of the top T20I players received large paydays as teams spent their cash. We look at the highly-ranked players in the MRF Tyres ICC T20I Rankings who were purchased in the IPL 2023 Auction. Only players with T20I rankings in the top ten in any of the three categories were considered for the list.
Rilee Rossouw
- Auction Price: INR 4.6 Crores paid by Delhi Capitals
- ICC T20I Rankings: Batters rank 8th
While Rossouw went unsold in the first round of player auctions, he returned in the expedited round and drew interest from the Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals. For INR 4.6 crores, the South African talent joined the likes of David Warner, Rishabh Pant, and Anrich Nortje in Delhi. Rossouw, who made his international return in 2022, has 372 runs in T20Is this year, averaging 46.5 and hitting at a rate of 176.3. Earlier this year, he was one of just two centurions in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia.

Adil Rashid
- Auction Price: Sunrisers Hyderabad paid INR 2 crores
- ICC T20I Rankings: Bowlers are ranked third
At his base price, the England bowling sensation, who played a key part in England’s T20 World Cup victory in Australia this year, was a steal for Sunrisers Hyderabad. The leg-spinner has taken 19 wickets in T20Is this year, but his most meaningful efforts have come in England’s past three must-win games at the T20 World Cup.
He took 1/16 in four overs against Sri Lanka in the must-win Super 12 match, earning him Player of the Match honors. In the semi-finals against India, he ended with 1/20 from four overs, including the key scalp of Suryakumar Yadav. Rashid took 2/22 in the final versus Pakistan, dismissing Mohammad Haris and captain Babar Azam during his four-over session.
Zampa, Adam
- Rajasthan Royals purchased it at auction for INR 1.5 crores

Zampa was signed by the Rajasthan Royals in the expedited round of the IPL Auction at INR 1.5 crores. Since 2018, the Australian leg-spinner has never slipped out of the top ten of the ICC T20I Bowling rankings and has been one of Australia’s greatest bowlers in the format. Zampa concluded the 2022 T20 World Cup as Australia’s joint-highest wicket-taker, with five wickets at an economy rate of 6.66. With 17 wickets at an average of 23.88, he is Australia’s second-highest wicket-taker in T20Is this year.

Sam Curran
- Auction Price: Punjab Kings paid 18.5 crores for him

Sam Curran, the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 Player of the Tournament, received the highest price in IPL Auction history when he was sold to the Punjab Kings for 18.5 crores. The English all-rounder, who was also named Player of the Match in the T20 World Cup final against Pakistan, ended as the tournament’s second-highest wicket-taker with 13 scalps. Curran’s hefty payout at the IPL 2023 auction was undoubtedly influenced by his crucial role in England’s T20 World Cup victory with his death bowling.

Shakib Al Hasan
- Auction Price: Purchased by Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 1.5 crores.
- ICC T20I Rankings: All-rounders are ranked first.
Shakib Al Hasan, the top-ranked T20I all-rounder, got a late-auction price of INR 1.5 crores from his old side Kolkata Knight Riders. Shakib had 11 wickets and 349 runs in T20Is for Bangladesh this year, including a 2/33 against India in the crucial T20 World Cup match in Adelaide, when he dismissed Suryakumar and KL Rahul and ran out Dinesh Karthik. The all-rounder has 252 rating points and is a highly-ranked multi-skilled player in this style.

Sikandar Raza
- Auction Price: Punjab Kings paid INR 50 lakhs for him.
- ICC T20I Rankings: All-rounders rank fourth.
Sikandar Raza got his first IPL 2023 contract when he was signed by the Punjab Kings for INR 50 lakhs. The Zimbabwe all-rounder has had an outstanding year in Twenty20 Internationals, getting to No. 4 in the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s T20 Rankings for all-rounders. Raza had a fantastic T20 World Cup in Australia, where he was Zimbabwe’s best run-scorer and second-highest wicket-taker.
Overall, Raza’s aggressive batting in this format drew notice in 2022, as did his bowling, which was revamped with the aid of Sunil Narine. Raza finishes 2022 with 735 T20I runs at an average of 35 and a strike rate of more than 150. His best performance of the year, though, came with the ball, when his three-for and stunning run out helped Zimbabwe defeat Pakistan by one run in the T20 World Cup.

David Wiese

- ICC T20I Rankings: All-rounders rank sixth
The 37-year-old Namibia all-rounder has had a fantastic run in T20Is in recent years, scoring over 300 runs and collecting 17 wickets. The hard-hitting all-rounder was signed by the Kolkata Knight Riders for his basic fee, making him the first Namibian player to sign with an IPL 2023 side. After his fierce late-order hitting and bowling were judged beneficial by Kolkata, Wiese becomes one of the unusual choices by a club from an Associate nation.
