FIFA+ is highlighting 100 of the greatest moments in FIFA World Cup history as we count down to the tournament’s commencement in Qatar on November 20. In 1974, the late, great Gerd Muller won more than just the FIFA World Cup. As the standout player for his nation, he won it at home by scoring the decisive goal in the championship game. The Germany star would have been anticipated to snicker when FIFA asked him to compare the 1974 World Cup to the one that came before it since he had realized the greatest dream of every football fan. Not at all.
Early World Cups in 1970’s
Muller responded, “For me, the 1970 World Cup in Mexico was a lot greater experience than 1974.” The squad grew together and played some truly legendary games. Everyone believes that our 1972 and 1974 teams, which won the European and World Championships, were superior, but I believe that our 1970 squad was the finest.
I have to agree that in 1970, every team was more powerful. The other teams all featured players of the highest caliber, but Morocco was perhaps our weakest opponent. We had to earn all our victories.
Of course, Muller had the most significant role in securing those victories in Mexico. With ten goals in five games, Der Bomber was just unbeatable.
He was the last player to score ten goals in a single World Cup and maintained a tendency of scoring more than one goal each game. Muller scored an amazing 68 goals in 62 international games by the time he retired. Paul Breitner, a teammate, praised him as one of the best football minds I’ve ever seen, but this unstoppable predator had a more easy reason for his incredible goal total. He simply stated, “A striker has to know where the goal is, and I knew where it was.
