FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022: Senegal advances to last 16 at World Cup, beats Ecuador 2-1

Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly scored the game-winning goal in Senegal’s 2-1 World Cup victory over Ecuador on Tuesday. Koulibaly scored three minutes after Moises Caicedo tied the game at one apiece. Senegal took the lead in a must-win match for the African champions thanks to a penalty by Ismaila Sarr in the first half. Caicedo scored in the 67th minute.

Senegal beats Ecuador 2-1

Ecuador would have advanced from Group A if the score had been 1-1, while Senegal would have been eliminated. In the other match, the Netherlands defeated Qatar 2-0 to win the group. Senegal came in second place, while Ecuador and Qatar were eliminated.

Senegal reached the Quarter Finals in 2002, the last time the West Africans advanced from the group stages. They had eliminated defending champions France in the group stages on their way to that point.
