EPL: West Ham 0-2 Brentford Hammers suffer fifth consecutive defeat

West Ham suffered their sixth successive English Premier League (EPL) loss at the hands of Brentford, who were in cruise control before halftime courtesy to goals from Ivan Toney and Josh Dasilva; Toney was substituted in stoppage time with a knee injury. Brentford moved up to ninth in the English Premier League (EPL) after defeating West Ham for the fifth time in a row with first-half goals from Ivan Toney and Josh Da Silva at the London Stadium.

EPL: West Ham 0-2 Brentford

Prior to kick-off, there was an emotional minute of respect for Pele, with Brazilian Lucas Paqueta leading the tributes in the center circle, but the playmaker and his teammates appeared out of sorts as Brentford raced to a 2-0 half-time lead. After West Ham failed to deal with a long throw, Toney put the Bees ahead in the 18th minute. Dasilva made it 2-0 with two minutes remaining in the half, and West Ham was booed off at the interval.

Brentford goalkeeper David Raya was not overworked as a second-half resurgence failed to materialize, meaning West Ham walked out among swaths of empty seats and dropped below Everton into 17th place on goal difference ahead of the weekend’s remaining matchups. Brentford’s night ended on a sad note, though, when Toney was stretchered off after seeming to damage his knee while defending a late corner.
Brentford manager Thomas Frank commented on the injury: “I’m hoping it’s positive.

I’m not sure how he’ll feel for the Liverpool game in three days. He’s unlikely to come off until anything happens. It might be much worse. It’s never a good indication, but we don’t know enough about it to be sure. West Ham fans booed when the final whistle blew, marking the club’s fifth consecutive defeat under Slaven Bilic for the first time since April 2017. Meanwhile, David Moyes has lost five straight league games for the first time since October 2005, when he was at Everton.

EPL Moyes said

“I simply want the best for West Ham because it’s been a fantastic club for me and the club has done well,” Moyes said. “We’ve moved it to a better location than it was before. I’m bound and determined to keep it there. I don’t want them to be pulled down again, so I’m hopeful we can get away from here. Brentford made the short journey back across London with another derby win under their belt, but it was marred in the final moments when Toney fell awkwardly defending a set-piece, snagging his studs in the grass and necessitating long treatment before his eventual retirement.

English Premier League (EPL) fifth consecutive defeat for West Ham, Brentford completed the league double against the Hammers last season, winning late on thanks to a Yoane Wissa goal here in October 2021, but the hosts enjoyed the better start and were denied the opener after just two minutes when Declan Rice’s rasping attempt from range brushed the outside of the post. Craig Dawson’s loss of Ben Mee at Jarrod Bowen’s corner shook the Bees even more, but the center-header backs flew just wide.

It seemed just a matter of time until the Hammers took the lead, as Bowen’s effort on the turn was deflected wide by Mathias Jorgensen – then Brentford scored against the flow of play. Ethan Pinnock flicked on Mathias Jensen’s throw-in, and after Lukasz Fabianski saved Christian Norgaard’s hooked attempt, Toney was on hand to prod home from close range. Brentford came into the game undefeated in each of the previous 17 English Premier League (EPL) games in which they had scored the first goal, and they had won 10 of 11 games in which they were leading by two goals, with the exception of a 2-2 tie with Tottenham four days previously.

EPL Player revealed the challenge

The Hammers almost made the ideal start to the second stanza when referee Darren England pointed to the spot after Bowen was knocked down by Mee, but VAR saved Brentford as replays revealed the challenge happened just outside the area. Moyes made his first substitution in the 64th minute, replacing Emerson with Michail Antonio, who moved Said Benrahma to the left of midfield with a more direct approach now a necessity.

Brentford was closing in on consecutive away English Premier League (EPL) wins for only the third time in their history, and after Frank turned to his bench to summon Saman Ghoddos, the Iranian midfielder reacted to Toney’s blocked free-kick to arrow a shot toward the bottom corner, It left West Ham’s door slightly ajar as Scamacca cleverly seized Paqueta’s ball to spin Pinnock and nearly surprise Raya, allowing the Spaniard to keep his clean sheet. Dawson rose to meet Bowen’s corner, but Raya was unbeatable.

“I don’t believe we’re lacking confidence because there have been some nice pieces,” Moyes remarked afterward (EPL). “I felt it was the best we’d played here in a long time, but I understand how confidence can be drained when you’re not scoring goals, taking opportunities, and the opponent is. We’ve been playing mediocre by my standards, and we still have a few levels to go. That average isn’t producing outcomes right now. We need to be better than average, and I thought we were tonight. We’re working to improve it and find solutions. We simply couldn’t come up with any goals tonight.”

While West Ham finish 2022 with a bad run of form, Brentford’s biggest worry right now is the health of their talisman Brentford manager Thomas Frank: “It was a wonderful away victory. We can come here and sometimes it just clicks against certain opponents, but for Brentford to win three consecutive games against West Ham is extraordinary.

Goals shift momentum since they began faster than we did. Before we scored, they had one or two solid opportunities, which swung the flow. We had been terrible on the ball and had given up too many times. We capitalized on our opportunities in the English Premier League (EPL). We were much better in the second half, and the score was closer to 3-0 than 2-1.

“We wanted to introduce some freshness to the squad after they performed well against Tottenham. (EPL) The atmosphere was peaceful, and the players were collected in their defensive stances. I’m constantly looking for more, and I’m always looking for ways to better myself. I’m already upset with how the first half went. I try not to be concerned about my place in the table. My main goal is to defeat Liverpool. I’ll have a glass of wine tonight and say, it’s not awful, but we can’t afford to be complacent.

It’s been a tremendous 2022 for everyone affiliated with the club. We began by defeating Aston Villa and finished by defeating West Ham. Two major clubs. We should take advantage of the situation and attempt to fly against Liverpool. (EPL) Moyes: All I want for West Ham is the best. West Ham manager David Moyes: “We played well today, but were caught off guard by a handful of throw-ins in the first half.

We’ve already discussed the lack of quality in the last third. We’ve already discussed the issue of not scoring enough goals. It’s become a running theme. We had the ball but didn’t generate enough opportunities. Declan hits the post, Dawson comes close, and the penalty is reversed. Something had to go our way.

“Tonight, we attempted a different lineup and strategy. We attempted to discover a technique to achieve a result from it. We were the superior team, in my opinion, and we had to change things up to score, which is why we maybe didn’t utilize the ball as well in the second half. I thought the manner we went about our work deserved us some good fortune. The players continued going and attempted to score, but I could only offer them applause. We’re falling short in the last third.

You have to give Brentford credit for how they used the long throw, therefore it’s up to me to find better methods to defend. I believe the fans have been fantastic. I felt the supporters were great today because they believed their team performed well. When asked whether the team is in danger of relegation, Moyes responded: “I’m hoping that isn’t the case, but I’ve been on the receiving end of a few of home losses here, so we have to be mindful that we need to pick up points somewhere. It’s unfortunate that we haven’t found any.

Tonight, we attempted to modify it and play better. I don’t believe it’s unreasonable to suggest I’m under pressure because of the nature of our industry. You’re always going to be under pressure if you go five games without winning. It’s football, so you feel horrible if you lose two or five games in a succession. Brentford scored their fourth English Premier League (EPL) goal immediately after a throw-in since the start of last season, more than any other team combined.
