The BCCI has informed that middle-order hitter Shreyas Iyer would miss the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, which begins on January 18. Iyer will miss the three One-Day Internationals owing to a back issue.

The batter will now be evaluated further at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). In recent months, the Mumbai batter has become an important component of India’s Test and ODI system. He was instrumental in India’s Test series victory against Bangladesh last December, striking a tenacious 87 and 29* at Mirpur to help India win the decisive game.

He also contributed to the 3-0 ODI series success against Sri Lanka, which concluded on January 15. Iyer’s career has been plagued by injuries. In March of 2021, he had a shoulder injury that put him out of play for many months.

His successor has been named Rajat Patidar. The Madhya Pradesh hitter has little international experience but enjoyed a breakout IPL season last year. He scored 186 runs with a strike rate of 122.36 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022/23.
