BBL: Sydney Sixers above Melbourne Renegades in Big Bash 2023, Match 21

Renegades have reverted to their previous form after a third loss on the Trott, while Sixers have ominously crept into second place on the BBL standings. Melbourne Renegades 124-7, Sydney Sixers 126-4 – Sydney Sixers won by six wickets at Geelong.

BBL Sydney Sixers above Melbourne Renegades in Big Bash 2023, Match 21-1

The Sydney Sixers won their fourth consecutive game after defeating the Melbourne Renegades in Geelong. The three-time champions have risen to second place in the Big Bash League (BBL) leaderboard. The  Renegades have dropped to fourth place following their third consecutive loss.

And after batting first and going 124 for 7, the writing was on the wall from the start. Shaun Marsh, who had returned to fitness for the first meeting with the Sixers two days earlier in Sydney, led the way with 35 points but was stopped by a great diving grab from England’s Chris Jordan.

Jonathan Wells hit 28, but a slow scoring pace forced them to settle for a low total. The Sixers’ assault was led by Hayden Kerr and Jordan (both 2 for 25), who gave up 12 points from overs 18 and 20. The visitors took control of the chase thanks to James Vince’s 39 and 38 for Kurtis Paterson as part of a second-wicket partnership of 60.

Although Akeal Hosein took 2 for 24, the Sixers were never in danger. With six wickets in hand and 13 balls left, Jordan Silk (15 not out) and Dan Christian (21 not out) led them to victory. On New Year’s Day 2023, both teams will play their first matches of the year. The Renegades open the new year against the Perth Scorchers, before the Brisbane Heat host the Sixers.
