The Strikers’ high-powered batting lineup imploded at the MCG on Thursday night, being bowled out for 108 after scoring 200-plus runs in a row. It was the third-lowest total in Strikers history and the lowest of any team batting first this season. In response, Tom Rogers blasted his maiden BBL half-century as the Stars cruised to win with 33 balls remaining.

Joe Clarke, the other opener, was the only one removed after being run out by a hard hit from Ryan Gibson. The victory pushed the Stars off the bottom of the table and increased their net run rate, giving them a chance to make the finals against the Melbourne Renegades on Saturday. On the same day, the Strikers play the last-placed Brisbane Heat, who are also strongly in contention.

Despite hitting two of the first three deliveries of their innings for six runs, Matt Short took 20 off Luke Wood’s first over. The Strikers’ innings included just two sixes. Nathan Coulter-Nile and Adam Zampa shined for the Stars, who dominated their opponents and bowled over 60 dot balls.

Liam Hatcher dismissed the competition’s top two run scorers, Short and Chris Lynn, while Beau Webster removed Adam Hose with a spectacular diving grab at extra cover. Wood was the only Stars bowler to have an economy rate of more than five per over. Harry Nielsen scored the game-winning goal for the Strikers, who remain winless in six efforts against the Stars at the MCG.
