BBL: Sixers won 7 wickets over by Thunders, in Big Bash 2023, Match 34

The Sydney Sixers emphatically won this match, comfortably chasing down the mark set for them, despite a shaky start, with the top three batters being bowled swiftly and leaving the team at 25/3, Jordan Silk and Moises Henriques steadied the ship with a match-winning partnership.

Both players took their time at the outset but made care to maintain a consistent run rate and keep the scoreboard moving. In the end, Silk stayed not out on 59 and Henriques smashed a four to bring up his 50, clinching the triumph for the Sixers.

Put in to bat first by the Sixers, Thunder struggled to get their innings underway, losing wickets at regular intervals. They got off to a bad start on the powerplay, with Sean Abbott restricting them to 3/12. However, Alex Ross and Sam Whiteman put up a decent partnership, but they were unable to accelerate at the correct periods and this was eventually reflected in their final score.

At 93/6, the Thunder were in danger, but owing to some strong hitting from Ben Cutting, they were able to save their innings and achieve a score of 133 in their 20 overs. Sean Abbott grabbed 3 wickets for only 9 runs in 4 overs and was especially efficient in the powerplay and at the close of the innings, only letting up 3 runs in the last over.

Ben Dwarshuis and Todd Murphy both helped with tight bowling and consistent wicket-taking. Overall, it was a remarkable effort by the Sixers’ bowlers. With a score of 133, the Thunder set a rather modest objective for the Sixers. Chris Green, Thunder captain, set the tone early on by getting two vital wickets and enabling his side to come back in the game.

However, the other bowlers were unable to build upon his performance and were unable to continue to apply pressure, and could not break the partnership between Silk and Henriques and once the two seasoned players had settled in, they were unbeatable.

The Sixers put up a terrific overall performance, propelling them to the top of the leaderboard. On the other side, the Thunder have dropped out of the top 4 and will need to work hard to get back on track and start winning again.
