The seventh match of the 2022/23 Big Bash, the 12th edition of the tournament, will pit Melbourne Renegades against Sydney Thunders. Renegades have won their only game of the season, while Thunder has won one and lost one. Renegades, who have finished at the bottom of the table for the last three years, got off to a good start in their season opener, defeating Brisbane Heat by 22 runs, with skipper Nic Maddinson scoring 87 off 49 balls.

Thunder, on the other hand, won a tight game against the Melbourne Stars in their first game. However, in their second match, they were humiliated by the Adelaide Strikers, who bundled them out for just 15 runs – the lowest score in men’s T20 cricket. Melbourne Renegades defeated Thunder on both occasions last season. In the Renegades’ first match against the Brisbane Heat, Akeal Hosein was the standout bowler. He had miserly bowling figures of 3 for 15 and dismissed key opposition batsmen.

Furthermore, the left-arm spinner opened the bowling for the Melbourne Renegades in their first game, so it will be interesting to see if he is used in the same capacity against the Thunder. Thunder’s batting lineup will have to overcome the previous humiliating defeat, which will be difficult against a strong Renegades bowling lineup. Melbourne Renegades will be hoping that Hosein can keep up his form and that Afghan spinner Mujeeb ur Rahman can share the workload.

Due to their victory in the first game, the Melbourne Renegades are expected to remain unchanged for this match. Captain Nic Maddinson and Sam Harper will bat first, followed by Aaron Finch in the middle order. They also have the dangerous Andre Russell for three more games before replacing him with Martin Guptill. The Thunders have a lot to think about, particularly their batting. However, after the horrors of the previous games, it is unlikely that there will be any major upheaval on the side. They may consider bringing in hard-hitting Ben Cutting to add depth.
