BBL12, A hat trick from Nathan Ellis and some lusty strikes from Tim David sparked the Hobart Hurricanes to a vital victory against the Sydney Thunder at Blundstone Arena. On Sunday, after slumping to 3-20 early in the innings, the Hurricanes knocked down their goal of 136 with 23 balls to spare and five wickets in hand.

David ended undefeated on 76 from 41 balls with six sixes, his greatest KFC BBL performance, while Matthew Wade struck 30 off 22 balls. Midway through the Hobart innings, the two got into a heated argument with Thunder skipper Chris Green. The Thunder were forced to lament a number of squandered chances.

When Wade was on three, Ollie Davies dropped a straightforward catch, and David was caught off a Usman Qadir no-ball on 41. The victory propels the Hurricanes over the Thunder into fifth place on the standings. Ellis had had a career-high 4-27, including a hat-trick, in the fourth and 15th overs.

His first victim was opener Matthew Gilkes (13 from 14 balls), before returning to dismiss top-scorer Davies (45 from 38 balls) due to a stunning low catch by Faheem Ashraf. Ellis then bowled Nathan McAndrew for a duck to become the Hurricanes’ second hat-trick player, after spinner Xavier Doherty in 2012. Riley Meredith (2-14 from four overs) delivered early blows after the Thunder won the toss and chose to bat.

Meredith bowled Test opener David Warner for a second-ball duck in the opening over, his second game this season after a nine-year absence from the BBL. In the fifth over, Meredith captured Sam Whiteman lbw, leaving Sydney reeling at 3-19. Paddy Dooley, who returned to the Hobart side, bowled an efficient 3-22, including the decisive wicket on the penultimate ball. Lightning-fast Daniel Sam was outstanding with the ball in a losing effort, ending with 4-18.
