Hobart Hurricanes defeated Adelaide Strikers despite a hard hit from a resurgent Chris Lynn. Lynn scored a 58-ball 87 on Monday night at Blundstone Arena, his biggest score of the summer, as the Strikers finished with a 177-for-six total. It wasn’t enough, as the Hurricanes’ top order gave Lynn, the tournament’s leading scorer, a taste of his own medicine. With an 86-run partnership off 49 balls, openers Caleb Jewell (54 from 28 balls) and Ben McDermott (53 from 33 balls) got the chase off to a flying start.

Jewell, who was voted Player of the Match, batted first, ahead of Matthew Wade and D’Arcy Short, and smashed four sixes, including one from Rashid Khan, who was exceptionally costly. Both Short and Tim David ended undefeated on 27, leading the Hurricanes to victory with 16 balls to spare. The victory, the Hurricanes’ third in six games, moves them off the bottom of the standings. Strikers, on the other hand, have lost four consecutive games following a promising 3-0 start to the campaign.

Lynn, who was released by the Brisbane Heat during the off-season, had previously hit nine fours and three sixes after the Strikers won the toss and chose to bat. In the last over, he was caught in the outfield by Jewell off the bowling of inexperienced seamer Mitch Owen. After losing starter Henry Hunt early, Lynn and Matthew Short combined for 72 runs.

Late in the game, he increased the ante with a cameo from New Zealand’s Colin de Grandhomme. Lynn pounced on Short in the 14th over, hitting two fours and a six in an over that yielded 16 runs. Patrick Dooley, the Hurricanes’ most economical bowler, went for 25 runs in four overs while also dismissing Adam Hose. With Peter Siddle looking to bowl in agony, strikers who chose to rest the tournament’s top wicket-taker Henry Thornton may have an injury issue.
