BAN vs IND: Mehidy stars as BAN edge India to clinch ODI series by lead of 2-0

Mehidy Hasan Miraz scored his first One-day International century and took two key wickets as Bangladesh defeated India by five runs on Wednesday. Bangladesh holds a 2-0 series lead heading into Saturday’s final match. Miraz scored an unbeaten 100 and added 148 runs for the seventh wicket with Mahmudullah Riyad to help Bangladesh recover from a 69-6 deficit and post 271-7 in Dhaka.

With an injured thumb, India skipper Rohit Sharma batted at number nine and hit an unbeaten 51 off 28 balls to give Bangladesh a scare as India finished on 266-9 in 50 overs. I’m in a good mood. Winning the series as captain is a dream come true,” said Liton Das, who led Bangladesh in his first ODI series after regular captain Tamim Iqbal was ruled out due to injury. We lost six wickets, but Miraz and Riyad Bhai played outstandingly,” Liton added.

Rohit, who hit five sixes in his blitz and needed a six to win on the final ball when Mustafizur Rahman held his nerve, had gone for scans after taking a hit while trying to catch a catch at slip during Bangladesh’s innings. In the second over of the match, Rohit dismissed Bangladesh opener, Anamul Haque, after the ball appeared to catch his webbing between the thumb and first finger, with blood oozing out as he walked off the field. Honestly, the thumb isn’t that great,” Rohit admitted. “There was some dislocation on the finger, but no fracture, so I could come and bat.”

Mehidy, who opened the bowling with his off-spin, finished with figures of 2-46 after dismissing KL Rahul, who was out lbw for 14, and Shreyas Iyer, who top-scored with 82, Ebadot Hossain, the fast bowler, stood out with three wickets, including Virat Kohli, who was bowled for five and later cut short the left-handed Axar Patel’s innings on 56. However, Mehidy and former captain Mahmudullah set up victory by putting on the highest seventh-wicket stand by any team against India in 50-over matches, thwarting an inspired bowling attack.

After removing the openers, India’s Mohammed Siraj led the attack, and fellow quick Umran Malik, who also took two wickets, soon joined forces to put Bangladesh on the back foot. Washington Sundar, a mystery spinner, struck three times in seven deliveries, including key wickets of Shakib Al Hasan (eight) and Mushfiqur Rahim (12). Mehidy, who played a key role in his team’s one-wicket victory in the first ODI, responded with his third ODI fifty, and Mahmudullah soon followed with his 27th half-century. After that, the duo shifted gears with regular boundaries. Umran, a tearaway quick, eventually caught Mahmudullah behind, but Mehidy kept going to reach his century on the final ball of the innings in an unbeaten 54-ball stand with Nasum Ahmed, who made 18.
