Australian all-rounder named Player of the Tournament

Ashleigh Gardner of Australia is the recipient of the ICC Player of the Tournament award, Due to her outstanding all-around performance during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023. The exceptional Gardner contributed significantly to Australia winning its sixth Women’s T20 World Cup by taking ten wickets and scoring 110 runs during the team’s successful campaign.

The 25-year-old was also superb in the championship match, scoring 29 runs off of 21 balls after moving up to the number three position to help Australia’s innings get going and taking an incredibly clean 1/20 from her four overs of off-spin to assist South Africa’s batsmen to stay at bay. In the final on Sunday, Gardner and Australia successfully defended their 156/6 score to win by 19 runs.

The Australians’ victory, their sixth in Women’s T20 World Cup history, gives them a hat-trick of titles under skipper Meg Lanning, following their victories in 2018 and 2020. After being selected Player of the Tournament, Gardner said, “We have been waiting for this moment. “Personal recognition is wonderful, but I’m most proud of our victory. Words cannot express my pride in the group.

We discuss evolving as individuals and growing the game globally. Playing cricket for your nation is a tonne of joy.  The Player of the Tournament, opening hitter Beth Mooney, overshadowed Gardner’s stellar performance for the day. After the match, Mooney praised her teammate in a statement.

“I believe she has matured greatly over the past few years, both on and off the court. She is probably at her most comfortable and confident in terms of her playing as well. “I’ve been incredibly impressed with what I’ve seen from Ash. For this Australian team, she constantly contributes in ways that help them win games. She will likely live a long time, so perhaps she can keep making those games.
