Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez was named FIFA World Cup 2022’s ‘Young Player’ after his country defeated France 4-2 on penalties in the final. Enzo Fernandez, a 21-year-old central midfielder for Portuguese club Benfica, scored his first goal for Argentina against Mexico in Argentina’s second group match. He became Argentina’s youngest World Cup goal scorer since Messi in 2006. He assisted Julian Alvarez’s goal against Poland, which Argentina won 2-0 and advanced to the knockout round.

Enzo Fernandez wins Young Player Award
Enzo was primarily an anchor in midfield for Scaloni’s team. Argentina’s transition play from defense to attack was improved by his presence. His vision and game-reading abilities were also beneficial to his country during the World Cup. Enzo Fernandez made his Argentina debut as a substitute in a 3-0 win over Honduras in September 2022.

He is an academy graduate of the River Plate club in Argentina. He made his senior debut in 2019 before spending two seasons on loan with another Argentine club, Defensa y Justicia. Enzo Fernandez won the Copa Sudamericana and Recopa Sudamericana with Defensa y Justicia before returning to River Plate last year and winning the title. He joined Benfica in 2022, where he played 13 games and scored one goal.
